The fellowship is open to students whose thesis projects connect with the centre’s research on rural–urban transitions and how these changes have shaped Denmark from the late 19th century to today.

As a Student Fellow, you become part of a collaborative research environment. Fellows gain access to selected data and material, receive academic mentoring from researchers at the centre, and take part in our community through Talks, Data Labs, and everyday discussions that shape ongoing work. The fellowship is designed to support your thesis while giving you insight into how interdisciplinary humanities research is carried out in practice. Student Fellows will explore topics such as:

  • language, mobility, and changing ways of speaking
  • migration histories and local belonging
  • cultural encounters in rural and urban settings
  • archives and material culture as sources for understanding social change and urban-rural transition
  • everyday life under industrialization or urbanization
  • literature as a lens on emotions, community, and place

If your project engages with these or related topics, a Student Fellowship at TRANSITION may be something for you. We welcome curious and motivated students, who want to immerse themselves in their thesis work while contributing to a broader research conversation.

If you are interested in a fellowship, please fill out this application form and mail it to transition@hum.ku.dk.
