In this Data Lab, we will explore historical sociolinguistics together. Taking point of departure in a discussion of the concepts of indexicality and enregisterment by Joan C. Beal (University of Sheffield), we will discuss how to approach the historical study of the relationship between language and society. With a particular focus on historical sociolinguistics in connection with rural-urban transitions at the center, we invite anyone to join us for this Data Lab if they are interested in a theoretical and/or methodological discussion of sociolinguistic explorations of the past and/or the relationship between language, historical development and societal transformations.

TRANSITION Data Labs are hands-on sessions where we gather to discuss theory, methods and/or data from research on rural-urban transitions. The format is inspired by public humanities approaches: open-ended, reflective, and collective. Data Labs are thus a place to explore theory, methods and research data together – across disciplines, methods, and perspectives.
